There are three pathways to fulfilling the prerequisites for the IBCLC exam, set by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE).
Pathway 1 is the most commonly used in the UK by health professionals, peer supporters, and breastfeeding counsellors. For more information about pathway 1 click HERE
Pathway 2 requires an accredited academic programme, which is not currently available in the UK
Pathway 3 involves mentoring by an IBCLC, which is not common practice in the UK at present.
The pathways pictogram summarises the pathways in the UK.
