The following days are available to both members and non-members, and suitable for general breastfeeding education as well as IBLCE exam preparation and recertification.

Course Details

COURSE APPROVED by the Lactation Education Accreditation and Approval Review Committee (LEAARC). You may complete the course over more than one year and in any order. Individual study days are 'stand alone' and may be booked by those not booking the course.

DESIGNED TO BE OF INTEREST TO:

  • Health Professionals with a special interest in working with breastfeeding mothers and babies.
  • Breastfeeding Counsellors and Peer Supporters seeking to update skills and knowledge.
  • Infant Feeding Co-ordinator post holders or candidates.
  • Candidates preparing for the IBLCE Lactation Consultant exam and for IBCLCs recertifying.

THE TWELVE STUDY DAYS are one day each month, either a Saturday in London or a Monday in Chatham, Kent. The course begins in May and ends in April and is repeated each year as a rolling programme:

Cost

£100 per day when an invoice to a trust or hospital is required.

£80 per day if paying by cheque or cash at time of booking.

£60 per day for unwaged Breastfeeding Counsellors and Student Midwives.

For those booking several study days, fees may be paid one at a time, as long as you are always in credit by one study day.

Special offer: 12 study days for the price of 11 when paid in full at time of booking.

CERTIFICATES FOR PROFESSIONAL STUDY: Each study day certificate is for 6.5 hours. The following CERPS have been awarded by IBLCE:

  • 6.5 L (lactation) CERPs for Days #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 12
  • 3.5 L CERPs awarded for Day #6
  • 6.5 E (ethics) CERPs awarded by for Day #8
  • 1.5 L CERPs awarded by for Day #10
OPTIONAL MONTHLY GRADED HOMEWORKS totally 50 hours combine with the 70 hours taught in study days to provide a comprehensive lactation education programme, as strongly recommended by IBLCE (exam board).

FORMAT: A combination of lecture, games, video, discussion, handouts, practical demonstration, dramas, case studies and skills practice which link theory to everyday work with breastfeeding mothers and babies. There is variety and we have fun! Each Study Day ends with some optional multiple choice exam questions for any who want to test recall and problem solving around the topic for that day, thus providing great practice for "The Exam."

BABIES AT STUDY DAYS: Babes in arms are welcome if the mum agrees to step outside the room if her baby becomes noisy so participants cannot hear or concentrate. Not suitable or safe for mobile babies.

NUTRITION AND NURTURE IN INFANCY AND CHILDHOOD: BIO-CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES.

Three day international, interdisciplinary conference.

Conference Announcement and Call for Papers

Our fourth international interdisciplinary conference is being organised by the Maternal and Infant Nutrition and Nurture Unit (MAINN), University of Central Lancashire. MAINN is led by Fiona Dykes, Professor of Maternal and Infant Health.

The conference links closely with the international journal Maternal and Child Nutrition (Wiley-Blackwell Publishing) that has its editorial office in MAINN. The journal is edited by Dr Victoria Hall Moran, based in MAINN, and Professor Kay Dewey, University of California, Davis.

There is a growing understanding of the complex interactions between socio-cultural, biological, political and economic influences upon infant and child feeding, eating and nutrition.

The conference aims to:

  • Illuminate socio-cultural, political and economic influences upon infant and child feeding practices.
  • Explore the nature of relationships within families in connection with various types of nutritive and nurturing behaviour in infancy and childhood.
  • Increase understandings of breastfeeding as a biopsychosocial activity.
  • Enhance understanding of the complex interactions between socio-cultural, psychological and biological factors in infant and child feeding, eating and nutrition.
  • Focus on key initiatives that may impact upon practices related to infant and child feeding, eating and nutrition.

Abstract Requirements (Deadline 30th Nov 2012)

Papers or posters are invited on:

  • Infant and child nutrition and feeding (to include biological, social, cultural, psychological, political, economic and practice issues). The scope includes fetal and neonatal nutrition, infant and child nutrition, feeding and eating, up to and including adolescence.
  • Nurturing the infant-parent relationship. The scope includes infants, parents, staff and/or organizations.
  • Thirty minute papers will be presented at concurrent sessions and posters will be displayed and discussed during designated poster sessions.
  • Abstracts should be submitted by email (Microsoft Word file preferred) to healthconferences@uclan.ac.uk The subject line of the email should clearly state "Nutrition & Nurture Conference Abstract". All abstracts will be reviewed by the Conference Review Committee chaired by Fiona Dykes and Victoria Hall Moran.

The abstract must include the following:
  • Title.
  • Author/presenter name(s), institution represented, postal address, email address. Please indicate who is the primary contact - this will be the person we contact.
  • A 500 word abstract that includes context, methodology (if appropriate), results/key themes and implications for policy, research, practice and/or education.
  • Clearly indicate if submitting for poster or paper. (Please also indicate whether you would be willing to present a poster, should your paper not be selected for presentation).
  • A short biography of author(s).
